2005—Present   Art Teacher/ Program Coordinator, The Heritage School, New York City Dept. of Education

  • Create and teach curriculum within the New York State Standards, for three art courses:  Introduction to Art, Art II, and Drawing/Painting. 
  • Coordinate museum visits and enrichment with major cultural institutions:  Guggenhiem, Arts Round Table, The Hudson Review, and MoMA.
  • Provide instruction and guidance for Advanced Placement Students preparing a college level portfolio, emphasizing breadth and concentration.
  • Coordinate Art Department, aide in arts integration, organize end of year art show, and direct student art competitions.

2005        Art Teacher, Manhattan Comprehensive Highschool

  • Prepared and taught lessons, within the New York State Standards, to a mixed ESL and native speaker class.
  • Created a semester “Art Appreciation” curriculum including the fundamentals of drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture, art history, art-criticism and museum visits.

  • Created developmentally appropriate lessons, within the New York State Standards and New York City Blueprint for the Arts, exploring art history, art criticism, techniques and materials in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional projects.
  • Encouraged exploration of materials, gesture, line, composition and color.

2004--2005       ESL Tutor, AfterSchool in Lincoln Square, MLK High School campus

  • Provided guidance and instruction for ESL learners in an after-school setting.
  • Gave instruction and enrichment in areas such as English composition, literacy, grammar, and study-skills.
  • Worked individually and with small groups toward the understanding and completion of school assignments.

1998-2000     ESL / Art Teacher.   Benin, West Africa.   U.S. Peace Corps  

  • Evaluated and adapted existing national curriculum for use in the classroom.
  • Created supplementary materials and activities to encourage creative thinking and conversation.
  • Prepared yearly and quarterly exams;  acted as a liaison between students and the school administration.
  • Organized the first art classes ever offered at the school.
  • Created art projects designed to introduce students to the processes and materials of art as well as encourage creativity, empower individual student voices, and provide income- generating projects.
